Attorney Registration – Wills Clinic
October 26 @ 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm
FreeGive one evening, and a family walks out with an estate plan.
At SALSA’s Wills Clinic, volunteer attorneys work alongside volunteer law students to prepare wills and ancillary documents for low-income San Antonians who would otherwise go without. Clients are pre-screened and income-qualified before the clinic, so you can spend your time on the documents rather than intake.
What You’ll Do
- Meet with pre-screened clients during scheduled appointments
- Prepare a simple will using SALSA’s forms and templates
- Prepare ancillary documents as needed — medical and financial power of attorney, directive to physicians, HIPAA authorization, disposition of remains, and declaration of guardian
- Execute documents on-site with volunteer notaries
No Estate Planning Experience Required
These are straightforward wills, and SALSA provides the forms, a brief orientation, and experienced mentor attorneys on-site to consult on anything unusual. Your commitment ends when the clinic does — there is no expectation of ongoing pro bono representation. Volunteers are covered under SALSA’s malpractice policy.
What to Bring
Your laptop. Everything else is provided.
Why It Matters
For most of the families you’ll serve, this clinic is the only realistic path to having a will at all. Without one, a home can end up in probate court instead of passing to a child, and a parent’s wishes about guardianship go undocumented. A few hours of your time protects what a family spent a lifetime building.
