Women in Pro Bono: Aisha Denis

During March, we’re highlighting the women attorneys whose pro bono service is transforming lives. One of those attorneys is Aisha Denis, whose journey with San Antonio Legal Services Association began shortly after law school and continues to make a lasting impact—on her clients and on herself.

From Fellow to Volunteer: Finding Her Way Back to SALSA

Aisha’s commitment to community-centered legal work started early in her career.

“I worked as an Estate Fellow with SALSA after law school and believe in the work that SALSA does for the community. I wanted to give back once I could as a licensed attorney.”

After gaining experience and becoming licensed, Aisha returned to SALSA—not out of obligation, but from a genuine desire to serve. Her time as a Fellow helped shape her perspective on the power of legal access, and she knew she wanted to stay connected to the mission.

A Case That Changed a Life—and Inspired a Future Attorney

While every pro bono case carries meaning, Aisha recalls one recent case that especially moved her.

“I recently finished a divorce case with children where my client’s daughter was assaulted by her stepfather (client’s husband). He was the primary breadwinner in the family, and she came to us at a time where she did not know how to move forward. We were able to get her out of the marriage with the protection needed for her family all as a pro bono case. Now she wants to go to law school to be able to offer legal services pro bono because of the work I was able to provide to her!”

It’s the kind of story that demonstrates just how far the ripple effect of pro bono service can reach. For Aisha, it was more than just helping someone navigate a legal process—it was about giving a mother and her daughter a path forward.

Why Pro Bono Matters—Personally and Professionally

Pro bono work isn’t just something Aisha does to give back—it’s something that deeply resonates with her values and goals.

“Personally, it’s been fulfilling to give back to the community I was raised in. This is the reason I went to law school and I’m amazed every time I get the chance to do it.”

And from a professional standpoint, pro bono work has also strengthened her skillset and broadened her perspective as a litigator.

“Professionally it allows me to fine tune my litigation skills while assisting those who may not have been able to afford or qualify for legal services otherwise.”

Advice to Women Attorneys: There’s a Different Kind of Joy in This Work

When asked what she would say to other women attorneys considering pro bono work, Aisha’s response is clear and powerful.

“I would say that pro bono brings a different joy to life that the hustle of for-profit legal work doesn’t always have. Clients are grateful for the work they receive. There is freedom in litigating well for people who have difficulty in receiving legal services. There are so many barriers to legal access in Texas.”

That sense of purpose and freedom fuels her continued dedication to pro bono work. It’s not just about doing good—it’s about reconnecting with why so many attorneys enter the profession in the first place.
