On Saturday, May 21, 2022, SALSA hosted its first ever Transfer on Death Deed (“TODD”) Clinic in collaboration with our partners at Mexican American Unity Council, Inc., where our talented volunteer attorneys drafted TODDs for indigent members of our community. Our partners at Bexar County Clerk’s Office provided on-site recording services, which made the TODD Clinic a one-stop-shop! We also are grateful for the support of our sponsors and collaborators: San Antonio Board of REALTORS®, UTSA Westside Community Partnerships, LISC San Antonio, City of San Antonio, St. Mary’s University School of Law, Hollerbach & Associates, and all of the volunteers who met with clients, provided great legal advice and drafting, and provided translation services and notary services. It was truly a group effort, and we are proud to have worked with everyone to serve our community!
What many don’t realize is what happened behind the scenes to make each client’s experience a success. In discussing how best to serve the clients, we realized that having a title report was crucial to our clients understanding the current state of their title, whether there were any liens on the property, whether they owed property taxes, or whether theirs was an heirs property. Having a title report also ensured that our volunteer attorneys had the correct legal description for each client’s property when drafting the TODD. Unfortunately, because our clients are indigent, they could not afford the fees associated with obtaining title reports for the clinic.
Our friends at Hollerbach & Associates jumped to action to donate comprehensive title reports for each client! Because of Hollerbach & Associates’ generosity, each client received a title report with their file, which enabled their volunteer attorney to advise them about the current state of their title, what to look out for, and how to plan for their property moving forward. We’re grateful to Hollerbach & Associates for their contributions to the TODD Clinic, which ensured the clinic’s success! We hope to have another event like this soon, and we’re looking forward to working with our volunteers, collaborators, and sponsors to continue the success of SALSA’s programs.
