ALAt SALSA’s TODD Clinic, volunteer attorneys assist low-income homeowners in protecting their homes and securing generational stability by preparing Transfer on Death Deeds (TODDs). This legal document allows a home to pass to a designated beneficiary without the need for probate.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
-Meet with pre-screened clients during scheduled appointments
-Review basic property and ownership information
-Draft a Transfer on Death Deed for eligible clients
-Provide limited legal advice related to property title, as needed
What You Need to Know:
-No prior experience in real estate or probate law is required
-SALSA provides training materials, on-site support, and experienced mentors
-Volunteers are covered by SALSA’s malpractice insurance for the scope of the clinic
-The clinic is a limited-scope opportunity and typically runs half a day
Impact:
-For many clients, a TODD is the only way they can legally transfer their home to a loved one
-A few hours of your time can prevent a family from losing their home or facing expensive probate proceedings
