San Antonio Legal Services Association (SALSA) is a corps of attorney volunteers coordinated by professional staff to provide free civil legal services to those with limited means and those who are vulnerable or at-risk.

We envision a community where everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of ability to pay.

HOW OUR VOLUNTEERS FIGHT HOMELESSNESS

  • Tenants Rights' Program: Volunteers negotiate a resolution that provides tenants a better outcome; obtaining ample time to move out and find a new place to live, or ensuring that an eviction does not stain their record, which ultimately would bar them from prospective housing opportunities.

  • Expunction and Non-disclosure Project: A record of an arrest without a conviction is a barrier for employment.  Volunteer attorneys assist citizens eligible for expunction and non-disclosure with eliminating or sealing prior arrests, enhancing employability.

HOW OUR VOLUNTEERS PROTECT VULNERABLE POPULATIONS

  • Wills Clinic: Volunteer attorneys draft  documents, including a will, statutory durable power of attorney, medical power of attorney, physician’s directive, and HIPAA release.  These documents are notarized and witnessed on site so that clients (primarily veterans, elderly and Habitat for Humanity families) leave the clinic with a complete estate planning packet.

  • Alternatives to Guardianship Clinic: Volunteer attorneys draft powers of attorney and supported-decision making agreements for adults with disabilities and their families.

  • CRIT-USA Clinic: Volunteer attorneys draft emergency medical documents including medical powers of attorney and supported decision-making agreements and assist with intake for education issues impacting children with severe neurological, muscular and skeletal disabilities.

  • Psychiatric Advanced Directive Clinic: Volunteer attorneys draft psychiatric advanced directives to enable clients with mental illness to state their preferences for treatment in advance of a crisis.

  • Veterans Legal Advice Clinic: Volunteer attorneys provide advice and counsel to veterans and their family members on a variety of civil law issues including tenants rights, family law and public benefits.
