DESCRIPTION:***This Page is for VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS ONLY\, if you are a Law Student please use the St. Mary’s CORE website here; if you are a Veteran seeking services please complete an application here.*** \nThe SALSA Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic provides limited advice and counsel to low-income Veterans and their Dependent on a variety of civil legal matters. Volunteer commitment is limited to the clinic with no expectation of providing pro bono assistance beyond the clinic. The goal of the clinic is to provide the Veteran with guidance on how to address and/or advance their legal issue pro se. The vast majority of issues presented at the clinic are easily addressed with the basic legal knowledge possessed by any attorney. Volunteer attorneys do not need experience or knowledge in any particular area of the law; all specialties are needed and welcome. However\, subject matter experts are on-call to consult for any nuanced issue that may arise. \nThis is a walk-in clinic\, open to any Bexar County-area Veteran or their dependents who meet our income eligibility requirements. The Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic provides limited legal assistance on various civil and administrative legal issues\, including but limited to: \n\nHousing/Landlord Issues: Early termination of lease\, rental repairs\, disability accommodations\, security deposit return\, etc.\nEmployment: Request for or denial of disability accommodations\, Department of Labor & EEOC complaint assistance\, etc.\nFamily Matters: Child support\, divorce\, custody\, etc. Assistance in family law matters is limited to ADVICE ONLY. No legal action will be taken or filed on behalf of any client beyond the clinic.\nConsumer Issues: Property or income tax disputes\, mortgage concerns\, and/or contract enforcement.\nVeteran-Specific Concerns: VA Pension and Compensation appeals\, VA Debt waivers\, Discharge Upgrade actions\, and/or DoD records correction.\nCriminal Expunctions\n\nVolunteer attorneys will be partnered with a volunteer Law Student from St. Mary’s School of Law. The law student will conduct the initial interview and provide support throughout the consultation. Of the roughly 6\,800 attorneys in San Antonio\, only about 240 (around 3.5%) currently volunteer with SALSA. This gathering brings together attorneys\, firm leaders\, corporate counsel\, judges\, bar leaders\, law students\, and current and prospective volunteers to change that. \nPlease RSVP by 12pm October 9. Jackson Walker’s building security requires the name of every attendee before entry\, so each guest must register individually. If you plan to bring colleagues\, please RSVP each person separately. DESCRIPTION:Help protect vulnerable adults in a single clinic session. Under Chapter 1102 of the Texas Estates Code\, a concerned party can submit an information letter asking the Court to investigate whether an adult over 18 needs a guardian. This triggers a court-initiated proceeding in which the Court appoints a Guardian Ad Litem and Attorney Ad Litem\, with fees covered through Bexar County for qualifying low-income families. \nWhat You’ll Do\nYou’ll be matched with a law student and a pre-screened client to complete the client’s 1102 submission packet from start to finish. Every client has already completed a pre-qualification checklist with an attorney\, so you can focus on drafting and finalizing the submission. Use the law student’s support however you’d like — drafting\, language interpretation\, or client communication. \nWhat to Bring\nYour laptop. All forms are available on SALSA’s resource page. \nNo guardianship experience required. Clients arrive prepared\, forms are ready\, and a law student is at your side. SALSA volunteers are covered under SALSA’s Professional Liability policy\, and clinic hours count toward the State Bar’s recommended 50 hours of annual pro bono service.

DESCRIPTION:Help a family get protection for a vulnerable loved one. At SALSA’s 1102 Guardianship Assistance Clinic\, volunteer attorneys and law students help pre-screened clients complete an 1102 information letter — a submission under Chapter 1102 of the Texas Estates Code that asks the Court to investigate whether an adult over 18 needs a guardian. Please bring your notary stamp or seal\, your journal\, and your current commission. \nVolunteer Translators\nMany of the families we serve speak Spanish or other languages. You’ll interpret conversations between the client and their attorney and law student\, help the client understand the documents they’re signing\, and make sure their story is captured accurately in the packet. No legal background is needed — just fluency and a willingness to help. \nNo legal experience required for either role. Volunteer attorneys handle all drafting and advice. Your time helps a family take the first step toward securing care and protection for someone who cannot advocate for themselves.

Your commitment ends when the clinic does — there is no expectation of ongoing pro bono representation. Volunteers are covered under SALSA’s malpractice policy. \nWhat to Bring\nYour laptop. Everything else is provided. \nWhy It Matters\nFor most of the families you’ll serve\, this clinic is the only realistic path to having a will at all. Without one\, a home can end up in probate court instead of passing to a child\, and a parent’s wishes about guardianship go undocumented.
