DESCRIPTION:Do you have a family member or loved one over 18 who may need a guardian? SALSA’s 1102 Guardianship Assistance Clinic helps families take the first step. Under Chapter 1102 of the Texas Estates Code\, a concerned party can submit an information letter asking the Court to look into whether an adult needs guardianship. The Court then appoints an attorney to investigate\, and for qualifying low-income families\, court and attorney fees are covered through Bexar County. \nAt the clinic\, each client is paired with a volunteer attorney and law student to complete and finalize their 1102 submission packet. \nPlease note: This clinic is by referral only for MAC members. To participate\, clients must first complete an 1102 pre-qualification checklist with an attorney at one of SALSA’s weekly Tuesday walk-in clinics at Morgan’s MAC.

This triggers a court-initiated proceeding in which the Court appoints a Guardian Ad Litem and Attorney Ad Litem\, with fees covered through Bexar County for qualifying low-income families. \nWhat You’ll Do\nYou’ll be matched with a law student and a pre-screened client to complete the client’s 1102 submission packet from start to finish. Every client has already completed a pre-qualification checklist with an attorney\, so you can focus on drafting and finalizing the submission. Use the law student’s support however you’d like — drafting\, language interpretation\, or client communication. \nWhat to Bring\nYour laptop. All forms are available on SALSA’s resource page. \nNo guardianship experience required. Clients arrive prepared\, forms are ready\, and a law student is at your side. SALSA volunteers are covered under SALSA’s Professional Liability policy\, and clinic hours count toward the State Bar’s recommended 50 hours of annual pro bono service.

Notaries and translators play a key role in making sure each client’s packet is complete\, accurate\, and ready for the Court. \nVolunteer Notaries\nSeveral documents in the 1102 submission packet must be sworn and notarized before they can be filed. You’ll verify each client’s identity\, witness their signature\, complete the acknowledgment or jurat\, and affix your stamp and seal. Please bring your notary stamp or seal\, your journal\, and your current commission. \nVolunteer Translators\nMany of the families we serve speak Spanish or other languages. You’ll interpret conversations between the client and their attorney and law student\, help the client understand the documents they’re signing\, and make sure their story is captured accurately in the packet. No legal background is needed — just fluency and a willingness to help. \nNo legal experience required for either role. Volunteer attorneys handle all drafting and advice. Your time helps a family take the first step toward securing care and protection for someone who cannot advocate for themselves.
