Veterans come to the SALSA legal help desk for a variety of civil legal issues. Tenants seeking repairs or the return of their security deposit; occupational disability accommodations; domestic issues; tax and mortgage problems; criminal record expunction and non-disclosure; VA benefit issues; and Military Discharge Upgrade actions. Volunteer attorneys are asked to speak with a SALSA client about their issue to identify if an actionable legal issue exists and (a) provide advice and counsel on how to proceed pro se; or (b) recommend SALSA take on the client for extended representation. There is no expectation for representation or other services beyond the volunteer’s time during the help desk hours of operation. Volunteers are covered by SALSA’s malpractice insurance while working at a SALSA help desk, clinic, or on an extended representation case. SALSA staff attorneys, volunteers, and subject-matter mentors are available to assist in areas volunteers may not be familiar with. Resouce materials are available in our resouce library here.
