87-year-old Veteran lost his spouse in February of 2023. The couple was not formally married but met the elements of common law marriage. Veteran’s home was in the spouse’s name and currently has two liens against the property. The Veteran may face foreclosure and eviction if he cannot gain an interest in the home as the surviving spouse. The lien holders are willing to negotiate with the Veteran, but any negotiation is contingent on the legal recognition of their marriage.
