Clients are pre-screened and income-qualified before the clinic\, so you can spend your time on the documents rather than intake. \nWhat You’ll Do \n\nMeet with pre-screened clients during scheduled appointments\nPrepare a simple will using SALSA’s forms and templates\nPrepare ancillary documents as needed — medical and financial power of attorney\, directive to physicians\, HIPAA authorization\, disposition of remains\, and declaration of guardian\nExecute documents on-site with volunteer notaries\n\nNo Estate Planning Experience Required\nThese are straightforward wills\, and SALSA provides the forms\, a brief orientation\, and experienced mentor attorneys on-site to consult on anything unusual. Your commitment ends when the clinic does — there is no expectation of ongoing pro bono representation. Volunteers are covered under SALSA’s malpractice policy. \nWhat to Bring\nYour laptop. Everything else is provided. \nWhy It Matters\nFor most of the families you’ll serve\, this clinic is the only realistic path to having a will at all. Without one\, a home can end up in probate court instead of passing to a child\, and a parent’s wishes about guardianship go undocumented. A few hours of your time protects what a family spent a lifetime building.

But a will isn’t a will until it’s properly executed — which is where our volunteer notaries come in. \nWhat You’ll Do \n\nNotarize self-proving affidavits and ancillary documents as clients finish with their attorney\nVerify identification and witness signatures alongside SALSA staff\nWork with the clinic’s volunteer witnesses to complete each execution\n\nWhat to Bring\nYour commission\, seal or stamp\, and your notary journal. SALSA provides the documents\, the workspace\, and a brief walk-through of the execution process before clients arrive. \nWho Should Volunteer\nAny commissioned Texas notary in good standing. Paralegals\, legal assistants\, and administrative professionals are especially welcome. No estate planning background needed — the attorneys handle the drafting; you handle the execution. \nWhy It Matters\nEvery document you notarize is one a family can actually rely on. Without a properly executed will and self-proving affidavit\, a family’s estate plan is just paper\, and their home may still end up in probate court. Your few hours are the difference between a draft and a legally binding document.

Volunteer commitment is limited to the clinic with no expectation of providing pro bono assistance beyond the clinic. The goal of the clinic is to provide the Veteran with guidance on how to address and/or advance their legal issue pro se. The vast majority of issues presented at the clinic are easily addressed with the basic legal knowledge possessed by any attorney. Volunteer attorneys do not need experience or knowledge in any particular area of the law; all specialties are needed and welcome. However\, subject matter experts are on-call to consult for any nuanced issue that may arise. \nThis is a walk-in clinic\, open to any Bexar County-area Veteran or their dependents who meet our income eligibility requirements.
